Online Canadian Passport Renewal Opens to All Eligible Adults in Canada

On July 28, IRCC announced that online passport renewal was available to all eligible Canadian adults in Canada, removing the previous daily application cap. The important word is “eligible”: the announcement does not turn every passport application into an online renewal.
What has changed
Eligible applicants can complete the renewal and payment online and submit a digital photo taken by a commercial photographer. Mail and in-person services remain available. IRCC describes a 20-business-day service standard for online renewal; applicants with urgent travel needs should consider the appropriate in-person service.
Removing the daily cap makes the online channel easier to access. It does not remove the need to follow the document, photo and eligibility instructions.
Work backwards from the travel requirement
Before starting, confirm whether the application is actually a renewal and whether the online channel fits the applicant’s circumstances. A person applying for a first passport should not assume that a renewal announcement covers them.
Keep the travel date and the application date separate in your planning. A service standard is not a sensible basis for making a non-refundable commitment without allowing for delivery and the possibility that an application needs further attention.
For employers arranging business travel
Check passport readiness early when assigning international travel. The employee’s passport, the destination’s entry requirements and any work permission required abroad are separate issues. A renewed Canadian passport does not answer whether the planned overseas activity needs authorization.
