Express Entry: How Canada Selects Skilled Immigrants

Express Entry is Canada’s main system for skilled-worker permanent residence: your profile is scored, ranked and, if your number is high enough, invited. This guide explains the programs, the draws and the strategy; you can also estimate your CRS score as you read.

How Express Entry works

Express Entry manages applications for three federal programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. You create a profile, enter the pool, and receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

IRCC then holds rounds of invitations, some general, some targeting categories like French speakers, health occupations and trades. Score above the cut-off and you’re invited to apply for PR. Note: since March 25, 2025, job offers no longer earn CRS points.

The single biggest lever is a provincial nomination, worth 600 points. See our BC PNP page and the broader permanent residency services.

The programs

Three ways into the pool

You need to qualify for at least one federal program to enter the pool, your CRS score then decides when (and whether) you’re invited.

Strong in draws

Canadian Experience Class

For people with recent skilled work experience in Canada, the natural next step after a work or post-graduation permit.

Federal Skilled Worker

The route for skilled workers abroad, foreign experience, education and language carry the application.

Federal Skilled Trades

For certified tradespeople, where a certificate of qualification and practical experience matter more than degrees.

Know your levers

What actually moves a CRS score

Most profiles have more room than their owners think. The big levers, in rough order of impact:

Strategy

Draws are not one-size-fits-all

As of July 2026, general draws have mostly required scores in the 500s, but category-based rounds for French speakers, health occupations, trades and other priorities regularly invite lower scores.

That makes strategy as important as the raw number: which program, which category, which province, and when. A score that misses one draw type can win another.

Frequently asked questions

There is no fixed pass mark. As of July 2026, general draws have mostly required scores in the 500s, while category-based draws can go lower. Cut-offs change every draw, check the latest rounds of invitations.

Four parts: core human capital (age, education, language, Canadian work, up to 500), spouse factors (up to 40), skill transferability combinations (up to 100), and additional points like French, Canadian study and a nomination (up to 600). Maximum: 1,200.

Yes. Since March 25, 2025, job offers earn no CRS points. A job offer can still matter for program eligibility, Federal Skilled Trades, Federal Skilled Worker and some PNP streams, just not for your score.

Retake language tests (the CLB 9 threshold unlocks big transferability gains), add French, complete or assess further credentials, and pursue a provincial nomination: 600 points that effectively guarantees an invitation.

No, it’s a simplified estimate based on the official criteria as of July 2026. The authoritative assessment is IRCC’s own tool, and your real score is fixed only when your profile is submitted.
