Spousal & Family Sponsorship
Reunite with the people you love, spousal, partner and family sponsorship applications guided from start to finish.
Bringing Your Family to Canada
Few immigration applications matter more than the ones that reunite families, and few are scrutinized more closely. As a Vancouver-based Canadian immigration lawyer, I prepare spousal and common-law sponsorship applications, inland and outland, that prove your relationship is genuine and meet every IRCC requirement the first time.
I also guide parents, grandparents and children through the family class: from super visas to the Parent and Grandparent Program, and from dependent child sponsorship to complex cases involving previous refusals or misrepresentation allegations.
Who you can sponsor
The three main sponsorship streams
Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor close family for permanent residence, each stream with its own eligibility rules, evidence demands and timelines.
Most common
Spouses & partners
Married spouses, common-law and conjugal partners, inland or outland, each route with different consequences for travel, work and appeal rights.
- Inland vs outland strategy
- Open work permits while waiting (inland)
- Relationship evidence that convinces
Children
Dependent children, including adopted children, where the definition of “dependent”, custody documents and adoption formalities decide the file.
- Dependent-child eligibility
- Adoption & custody documentation
- DNA and relationship proof where needed
Parents & grandparents
The invitation-based Parents and Grandparents Program, and the super visa as the practical alternative while you wait for an invitation.
- PGP invitations & income requirements
- Super visas for parents
- Minimum necessary income planning

What decides it
What decides a sponsorship application
Sponsorship files are won on completeness and credibility. The recurring decision points:
- Genuine-relationship evidence, organized, consistent and complete
- Sponsor eligibility: status, undertakings, and income where it applies
- Complete forms, applications are returned for a single missing signature
- Honest answers everywhere: misrepresentation carries a five-year ban
Good to know
Sponsorship questions, answered
Processing times move with IRCC’s workload, typically around a year, sometimes faster or slower depending on the stream and country. A complete, well-evidenced application is the one variable you control.
Inland offers the open work permit while you wait but effectively requires staying in Canada; outland preserves mobility and appeal rights. The right choice depends on your status, travel needs and risk profile.
For most spousal and partner sponsorships there is no minimum income requirement, though exceptions exist, and parents/grandparents sponsorships do carry income thresholds over multiple years.
Inland applicants can typically apply for an open work permit with the sponsorship. Outland applicants generally cannot, unless they hold separate status that allows work.
Depending on the stream, options may include an appeal to the Immigration Appeal Division, judicial review, or reapplying with stronger evidence. Refusal reasons should be analyzed before choosing the response.
